Frequently Asked Questions

No question is too big or too small

How can we help?

  • This is a great question! If you are unsure, we can help you navigate that decision during a 15 minute telephone consultation. We will never push intervention to line our pockets with your hard-earned money. Long story short, every child is unique; however, there are a few guidelines to consider based on “typical” speech and language development. We look at windows of time when new skills typically emerge or old errors start to disappear. We base our decisions on “typical speech and language development”, we consider risk factors (e.g., underlying diagnosis, family history, access to other services, etc) and we determine whether or not there are publicly-funded options available. Big picture, we believe that effective communication is the foundation upon which we establish connection. We use our voice personally and professionally. We want to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to develop their own form of confident communication if there is a need or strong desire to do so.

  • A speech-language pathologist (SLP) conducts assessments through interviews, evidence-based, standardized tests (if judged appropriate based on population and needs), and observations - in various settings if possible - to determine an individual's specific strengths, needs and challenges. The data collected gets analyzed in order to collaboratively create a therapy plan that best supports the client’s needs while leaning into their strengths.

  • The duration of speech therapy varies greatly depending on the individual’s needs, goals, progress and severity of difficulties. Some may see improvement in a few sessions, while others may require ongoing therapy over months or years. What we do know for sure is that early intervention is best whenever possible.

  • Sessions typically last between 30 and 60 minutes and involve various activities and exercises tailored to the person's interests, strengths and therapy goals. For younger children especially, therapy is mainly play-based because motivation and connection are at the forefront of any meaningful progress. Regardless, we always take time to connect and to have fun wherever it works best for you.

  • Many health insurance plans cover speech therapy through reimbursement up to a certain annual accrued total, but coverage can vary. It's advisable to check with your insurance provider for specific details prior to booking. We bill clients directly through our software, Jane. Payments can be made directly by credit card or e-transfer. A receipt immediately gets sent to you by email following payment by credit card. E-transfer payments are manually entered into the system therefore you could expect a delay of 1 to 2 business days before you receive the receipt by email.

  • Yes! Parents can support their child's speech therapy by practicing skills at home, engaging in language-rich activities, and encouraging communication in daily routines. Parents are encouraged to attend at least one therapy session to understand the goals and their expected progress over time as well as to observe how their child responds to prompting. Homework can be provided if requested. We do not want to put more onto your overflowing plate but if you have the resources, let us know and we will make sure to send work home.
